Re: Historia de los bancos de semillas

Mensajepor tristan » Dom Abr 20, 2014 5:00 pm

"There are several strains out in the world of cannabis genetics whose origin and further breeding process seem to be unclear. Growers get especially confused, when a certain strain is offered under the same name by two or more seed banks: who has the original one, whose are copies? Bubble Gum is such one contentious strain, of which at least two seed banks do offer their own versions, in this case Serious Seeds and T.H. Seeds (both residing in Amsterdam), not to mention all those internet-based criminal copy cats here. So I decided to trace back the real roots of Bubble Gum. Asking both the above-mentioned breeders resulted in two corresponding versions of the Bubble Gum`s breeding story, giving good reasons for the existence of two high-quality Bubble Gum strains: The original material was developed by a grower in Indiana (USA) during the 80ies. In 1993, this guy gave three very different female Bubble Gum plants to Adam from T.H. Sees as well as to Simon and Tony (the two splitted up shortly after, with Simon founding Serious Seeds and Tony Sagarmatha Seeds) from Cerebral Seeds. So Bubble Gum arrived in the Netherlands in the hands of three breeders. And from that moment on, different new chapters were written in the breeding history of Bubble Gum, its development kind of branched out. Three breeders – three ways of breeding: These seed meisters were going to make their own special selection out of the three different genetic types they had received. Simon reports: “As far as I know, T.H. Seeds did work further with another of those 3 plants than I did”. That`s the reason why Adam (T.H. Seeds` BG will be another story…) considers his Bubble Gum as “mostly indica”, whereas Simon puts his version into the “Mostly Sativa” category. He focused his research on two of the three lines, finally deciding for one type that should become his Bubble Gum seed strain. It took Simon five generations to end up in the desired breeding result, officially registering it then as “Bubble Gum”. He says that it is not possible to give exact sativa/indica percentages, but reveals that the genetic background of Bubble Gum consists of three different exotic sativas, amongst them Mexican and Columbian, and an Afghani indica. It is remarkable that Bubble Gum is the only inbred strain (no F1 hybrid) in the Serious menu, thus being especially uniform. Upon being asked about special considerations to Bubble Gum, Simon explained: “The bubble gum shows a remarkable uniformity in plants grown from seeds. It is a strong and beautiful plant which grows a heavy stem, you never need to tie heavy buds up. The initial stages of seedlings can be tender, and you have to take care a bit for them in that stage. It is important to not let them be overgrown by neighbouring plants which may grow faster at first. Once when about 2 weeks old, the Bubble Gums will start to pick up speed and grow as fast as other plants.” This delay in growth can be explained by the fact that the BG is an inbred strain and therefore does not have that hybrid vigour effect (faster and stronger growth) of F1 hybrids."

"Mr Nice Seedbank: Shantibaba explains what happened when a Welshman, two Australian cannabis breeders, and the best selection of old and new world cannabis varieties shared a small room.

Howard Marks (Mr Nice) and I (Shantibaba) met during the late 1990's while I was living and working in Holland. A few years previously (1995), I had set up the Greenhouse Seed Company. Coincidentally, at the same time, Howard was released from a lengthy imprisonment in the USA. During the next few years, we became very good friends and with the success of my breeding work and help from Neville Schoenmaker (the father of Dutch Seed banks), Howard and I discussed the possibility of working together. We decided to start a seed company to help growers throughout the world. Neville and I were already working together on various seed projects, growing and supplying certain strains to coffee shops as well as changing the uses and perceptions of cannabis.

In 1998, when Neville co-owned the Greenhouse coffeeshop in the Red Light Area, and I co-owned and worked the Greenhouse Seed co (since establishing it in 1994)...we decided to really try that year to do our best at the HTCC. Until then, Neville and I, operating as individuals, had won almost every prize awarded for cannabis breeding. On behalf of Greenhouse, we blitzed the 1998 HTCC, winning every prize other than that awarded for clothing. We came first and second in the overall HTCC. I did not particularly like the event so decided to retire from it that year. Coincidentally my relationship with my Dutch partner deteriorated, and egos went crazy. As a result, I sold my interest in the Greenhouse Seed Company and, as a sole trader, set up Mr Nice Seedbank (MNS), which has always been and remains a Dutch company. Shortly afterwards, Neville also forego his interest in Greenhouse. MNS never entrusted plants to non-growers, including our ex-Dutch partners. Inevitably, confusion results when different companies use the same names for different sub-species, so MNS renamed them all. Seed companies' most valuable assets are the original mother and father plants, which take many years to collect and select. Every seed company uses strains from particular parts of the world, but they differ greatly. MNS uses a collection of both Neville and Shantibaba's plants, the most pedigreed cannabis plants ever bred. We established MNS, with its forty parent plants, to make strains and seeds available to all levels of growers in order to help them help us spread the genetic diversity of this miraculous plant.

Rather than joining any seed companies' bandwagon by merely chasing money, Neville, Howard, and I dedicated our efforts to make old and new world seeds available for growers. We did not care how many seeds we sold or whether we had a profile in the limelight. We are daily users of cannabis, and the mother and father plants Neville and I have kept alive for the last twenty years are capable of producing every currently existing strain.

In 1999, Dutch law changed and no longer permitted the production of seeds. Due to the Dutch gedogen law, however, selling seed imported from another country remained legal. We wanted to fulfil our project without breaking any country's laws. Accordingly, MNS moved its growing operations to Switzerland, where the law permits growing cannabis for seed production. Many Dutch seed companies lost plants, mother rooms, and seed crops, but in Switzerland, MNS seed production blossomed.

Neville remained in Holland and continued to produce seeds and refine breeding techniques. Howard pursued his cannabis legalisation agenda by writing articles, books, and doing stand up shows. I established Gene Bank Technology in the Swiss canton of Ticino, producing strains and seeds for other companies, as well as furthering the use of cannabis as a medicine and producing unique flower essential oils for the cosmetic industry. All went well, with Ticino eventually playing host to the legally permitted establishment of over seventy growing shops and countless farms producing seeds. The Swiss authorities regularly inspected the premises and the activities taking place, tenaciously collecting any taxes due. Then suddenly, in 2003, without any hint of a warning, a Ticino based Prosecutor launched Operation Indoor, an avalanche of arrests, closures and headlines. The Ticino authorities seized GBT, shut it down, and imprisoned scores of innocent people. To this day, a state of confusion exists in Switzerland as cantons interpret Swiss law whichever way the local politicians want. I received a two-year term of imprisonment in Ticino. (However, I still have all the mother and father plants.) Only a handful of other seed producers have faced the courts, and hundreds of cases remain unresolved.

The lack of union and cooperation among the various seed companies and the consequent frustration for the grower is an unfortunate aspect of this particular industry. To overcome the problem MNS has consistently maintained a visible presence on various helpdesks, directly interacting, testing, and researching with the growers of its products. Some other seed companies do the same. This site is an attempt to set an appropriate standard, and MNS hopes to bring to the seed industry other like-minded companies from all different sections of this sub culture. Our sincere aim is to help people, wherever they are, who have worked or intend to work with any MNS product. I will monitor the site with the explicit intention of promoting interaction and constructive criticism among growers of all levels. It will become an online archive and an educational site for anyone who visits. The site will not be selling seeds or dispatching them but will, if asked, provide links to those interested in this aspect. Live and let live will be the central theme flowing through the MNS site, so please join in if you have something to share or ask. You are all welcome."

"
About Nevil (The King Of Cannabis)
.biography

Nevil Schoenmakers, born in Australia from Dutch parents, left Australia for the Netherlands in 1976. He started growing cannabis in 1978 and soon discovered that the commercially available Thai, Colombian and Nigerian equatorial strains did not perform well in the northern European climate of Holland. He started growing indoors under artificial lighting in 1979, but was not satisfied with the results using equatorial Sativas indoors. Realizing that the solution to the problem was a question of genetics, he decided that the best way to obtain good genetics was to start a seed bank and therefore he had to source and distribute premium Cannabis genetics from all across the world. The idea of breeding cannabis to suit varying conditions was fairly obvious as he had a background as a champion bird breeder, a hobby he started at just 8 years of age. The seed bank he created, then became a company that was named, 'The Seed Bank of Holland'.

It was during Nevil's 83/84 collection trips to the US that he aquired, from Sandy Wienstein (who passed in 1987) the only G-13 cuttings to ever leave Sandy's garden. Nevil returned to Holland and made three crosses with G-13 at the Seed Bank. G-13 x Haze (in catolog only 1 yr, discontinued. Currently Barney's Seeds), G-13 x Hash Plant (renamed: Mr. Nice. Currently Sensi Seeds), G-13 x Skunk#1 (Last, and according to Nevil, the best of the G crosses. Currently Mr. Nice Seeds).

On June 24, 1990, Nevil Schoenmakers, who legally operated the Seed Bank in Holland, was arrested by the Australian authorities at the behest of the US government while visiting family in Perth. A 44-count indictment was lodged in New Orleans, charging him with the sale of marijuana seeds to undercover agents and indoor growers in the New Orleans area in 1989. After years of legal battles, the charges were ultimately dropped. He could not be extradited from Holland as his activities were legal under Dutch law. In 1991 The Seed Bank was bought by Ben Dronkers, the founder of Sensi Seeds.

.Popular Culture
Today Nevil is seen as the original father of the Cannabis seed industry and many awarded strains have been created by him and in his honour. Strains like Nevil's Haze and Nevil's Skunk, Silver Pearl, Silver Haze and many others. His work with Northern Lights, a mostly Indica strain originally developed in the Pacific North West of the United States, became the benchmark for indoor Indicas and is found in the pedigrees of nearly all of the best modern Indica lines. He is best remembered for the F1 hybrid Northern Lights #5 x Haze. This hybrid and its daughters have dominated the Cannabis Cup since the 1980s to the present day. Cuttings bred and selected by Nevil that were created in the 1980s, are still alive today and still win championship awards. It is this cross that led to many of the modern medicinal strains that are popular today. "
